A burial vault is an outer receptacle that the casket is placed in at the cemetery. It is usually made of concrete which may include your choice of optional protective liners. The burial vault protects the casket from the weight of the earth and the heavy maintenance equipment that will pass over the grave. It also helps resist water and preserves the beauty of the cemetery by preventing the ground from settling. In most areas of the country, state or local law does not require that you purchse a vault or container to surround the casket in the grave, however, most cemeteries require them.
